As per the Jerusalem Post, the two arrested men belong to a Telegram group called the ‘Green Drone’. The group with a slogan saying: ‘Free Love’, advocates for the legalization of cannabis in Israel. Moments before the organization released the drone, they wrote a message on the Telegram page, saying: “It’s time my dear brothers. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the green drone, handing out free cannabis from the sky… Enjoy my beloved brothers, this is your pilot brother, making sure we all get some free love.” The unusual and still illegal in Israel event was reportedly in celebration of a new project called ‘Rain of Cannabis’. The masterminds behind the operation explained that due to the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown restrictions in the country, they had to come up with ‘new ways of getting cannabis to consumers’. They call their actions ‘thinking outside the box. Sending this message, the group says they will be able to deliver the substance across the country, despite the current laws against it. They stated: “We’re launching the ‘rain of cannabis’ project, that will include a weekly delivery to different parts of the country of 1 kilo of cannabis divided into free 2 gram bags.” It is still unclear what charges the two men are facing, as they are technically not selling the marijuana, but giving it away. Besides, they weren’t in possession of the substance by the time the police arrived either. Since cannabis is still illegal in Israel, the men who were taken into custody may face serious jail time. However, activists are still trying to promote the idea of legalizing marijuana in the country with two bills introduced to the country’s legislature earlier this year, which could potentially lead to legalization.
