Flying your Drone in the Winter

Snow/Rain/Sleet
is an obvious problem for Droners

What's the big deal

During the winter most droners aspire to capture majestic shots of snow covered trees.

Most people won't take their drones out if its raining, but what if its snowing. Snow isn't a huge problem for drones because it is too solid to mess to get into the electronics: telemetry and controls. But it brings in another problem the cold.

Because the batteries are lithium and infused with a protective lining they can withstand most extreme temperatures. THIS ISN'T FAIL PROOF though.

What about sleet? Sleet is pretty much the snowy slushy mush that you find at the side of the roads after a snow storm.

SLEEET IS A DANGER FOR DRONES. The problem with sleet is it weighs the drones down and is just a point where it can mess with the electroncs but not roll of off.

Snow can transition into Sleet very quickly.

And the worse thing that can happen to your drone is when sleep turns into rain because out of nowhere your drone will be coated with freezing rain.

I'm Not trying to be a KillJoy

Drones like everything are perfect reasonable toys if you know the risks. I have flown my Mavic for many years through various snow storms.

How to protect your drone

I'll make it short and sweet to point

For most your drone is your baby.

Here are 5 ways to protect your DRONE
  1. Make sure to purchase a drone skin to make the surface shield off the wintery mix.
  2. Don't fly in HAIL, SLEET or RAIN
  3. Avoid flying if its extremely windy (Greater than 15mph)
  4. Make sure to calibrate your GPS to avoid disorientation in flight
  5. Fly in accordance to the FAA
